Executive MBA Pros and Cons

As more and more companies are realizing the value of MBA, experienced managers who do not have an MBA are flocking business schools to get a degree. The biggest questions these managers face while deciding on an executive MBA program are:

Is it worth the time and effort?
Top business schools vs the closest school available?
Stop-buy-fly EMBA programs versus the "full-time" EMBA programs?
Learning opportunity versus networking opportunity or both?
Return on Invested Capital?

Here are some great information resources which may help prospective candidates:

So glad to see this type of blog! This topic deserves a lot of attention due to the substantial impact a solid MBA can have on the individual and their workplace & community.

As a second semester EMBA student, I have already realized substantial benefits: knowledge, network, vision, credibility, etc. So, it is definitely worth the effort.

When deciding where to go, the balance must be struck between a top school, proximity, and opportunity cost. Most would consider cost, but the real issue is opportunity cost. That is to say that one must consider the actual value to be gained (and the commitment needed) versus the best alternative use of the time and money required. This point cannot be under-emphasized, especially in today's environment of low barriers to entry in many fields, particularly those entrepreneurial in nature. Getting an MBA is a risk. The time and money required could easily be used to capitalize a small business. Basically, go to the best school feasible for the amout of travel and financial risk you are willing to incur. I have to travel three hours each way twice a month. Long story short: I love it and am sure that substantial value will be realized.

Definitely choose a full-time credible program. Start with the rankings. One can argue the virtue of various programs, but at the end of the day there are top-tier programs and everything else.

Love the blog and looking forward to future posts!
